Convention Social Events

Thursday Night Welcome Reception

Following the round table discussions, convention attendees, including our Coaching Certification Cohort, are invited to join us for drinks and hors d’oeuvres the Embassy Club Ruan Center, Downtown Des Moines.  Take in the spectacular panoramic views of the city and State Capitol complex from atop the Ruan Building at The Des Moines Embassy Club’s Downtown Club.  Then dine around on your own with new and old friends.

Friday Morning Group Run or AM Yoga Session

Yoga session will be provided at the Marriott Downtown

The best sights of Des Moines are a short distance run from the Marriott Downtown and surrounding host hotels. You can start and end your run right outside the main entrance to the hotel lobby. Take advantage of well-marked bike lanes on Grand Avenue and Walnut Street through the East Village and downtown area. The Western Gateway Park and Pappajohn Sculpture Garden are worthy of any cityscape and offer extra wide sidewalks for runners and recreational walkers alike.

The city boasts a well-connected paved trail system that meets at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. The Principal Riverwalk features the cultural activity of the Des Moines River, while the Meredith Trail incorporates recreational activity in the city parks along the Raccoon River. Sign posts at major trail intersections will keep you on course and give you an opportunity to get your desired miles in without having to run on city roads.

Medium distance runners looking to get a few more miles in than what the downtown area can offer should consider a 2 mile loop around Gray’s Lake Park. Follow the signs to Principal Park along the Meredith Trail and head to Gray’s Lake Park. After looping around the lake, remain on the trail and head back downtown along Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway for a great view of the city skyline as you return to your hotel. For an even longer run, cross Fleur Drive from Gray’s Lake into Water Works Park for up to an additional 5 miles through a 1,500 acre wooded park mostly void of vehicle traffic.

Trail connectors and portions of these suggested routes will be highlighted Friday and Saturday morning during the group runs sponsored by Leslie Jordan.  Group run route http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=560042
