For the past 14 years, the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners (WNLRs) have provided scholarships to outstanding high school senior distance runners throughout Monterey County. This year, a total of $11,600 in awards was given to 13 student runners who were nominated by their coaches and met the WNLRs running, leadership and educational criteria.
The scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2000, are derived from donations of the WNLR club members and a matching grant from the Big Sur International Marathon.
"Our running club is dedicated to distance running, health, and fitness and we want to encourage and recognize our local senior runners.' said Susan Walkup of the selection committee. "We"re proud that one of our 2008 scholarship winners, Diego Estrada, ran in the Olympics in 2012, and we"re just as proud of Francisco Cornejo, one of our 2007 winners, who after earning a Master"s degree in Education is back in our community teaching and coaching cross country and track.'
The largest scholarships were presented to James Welsh of Monterey High School, Alex Lathos of Notre Dame High School, Lizzie Tardieu of Santa Catalina High School, Zechariah Snel of Seaside High School, and Jocelyn Ruiz of Alisal High School.
