Sports Events Pursuing Certification from the Council For Responsible Sport Grows

04/21/2014
Originally designed to recognize environmental and social responsibility initiatives at running events and triathlons, updated certification standards have attracted gran fondos, professional golf tournaments and electric kart races as well. April 21, 2014 - Portland, OR: In its first six years of operation, the Council for Responsible Sport certified a total of 76 sports events. So far this year, 33 certification applications have been received; 21 of those are from new events and 12 are applications from events that are due for biennial recertification. Council for Responsible Sport Executive Director Keith Peters attributes this growth to a number of factors: "First of all, the updated certification standards we implemented back in January were specifically developed to apply to a broad range of sports event types, unlike previous standards, which catered primarily to endurance sports. Secondly, word-of-mouth referrals from certified event organizers have helped encourage others to pursue certification from the Council. And, thirdly, the Council"s growing brand recognition has attracted applicants from outside the United States - Italy, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Canada - as well as event types ranging from mass participation bike rides like the TD 5 Boro Bike Tour, to professional golf"s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, to the G-Zero Championship Racing Series for electric karts.' Indeed, 2014 is shaping up to be a big year for the Council and its family of certified events. At some point this year, the milestone of having certified 100 events will be achieved. And that 100th certification is likely to be awarded to one of the seven Ragnar Trail Relay events that have applied for certification this year-the odds are certainly in Ragnar"s favor. Somewhere along the line, the Council will celebrate the fact that its certified events have served over 1 million athletes and countless spectators as well. Celebrating the good work of event organizers is a big deal to the Council-one of three pillars in our program offering: 1. We SUPPORT event organizers who strive to produce socially and environmentally responsible events through hands-on coaching and a variety of support group programs. 2. We CERTIFY responsible event production practices through our certification program. 3. We actively CELEBRATE events that have become certified by the Council. About the Council for Responsible Sport: Our vision is a world where responsibly produced sports events are the norm. Our mission is to provide objective, independent verification of the socially and environmentally responsible work event organizers are doing, and to actively support event organizers who strive to make a difference in their communities. Our Certification program provides a comprehensive method for event directors to incorporate environmental and socially responsible initiatives into their events, while informing stakeholders about events that adhere to a rigorous set of standards. Certified events range in size from ParalympicsGB Training Camps held at the University of Bath in the UK, with some 150 athletes participating, to the AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, Georgia, with 55,077 timed finishers. To date, 76 different events have achieved certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, serving over 860,000 athletes in the process. The Council"s current certification standards (v4.1) were finalized after a period of stakeholder review in the fall of 2013, and were implemented in January 2014. Certification is modeled after the U.S. Green Building Council"s LEED Green Building Rating System, which certifies buildings and materials according to resource conservation and energy efficiency criteria. www.CouncilforResponsibleSport.org
