Mount Desert Island Marathon - RRCA Eastern Region Championship
Oct 20 2013
Bar Harbor ME
- Half Marathon
The Mount Desert Island Marathon was named "most scenic" and runner-up "best overall marathon" by Runner's World Magazine.
The point-to-point racecourse starts in the heart of world famous Bar Harbor, with the first miles climbing between the mountains of Acadia National Park on either side. The course continues through the picturesque villages of Otter Creek, Seal Harbor, and Northeast Harbor, where the runners get their first glimpse of breathtaking Somes Sound, the only natural fjard on the eastern seaboard. Beyond Somes Sound, runners enter the village of Somesville, the first to be settled on MDI by Abraham Somes in 1761. The fall foliage is often at its peak, creating a sea of dappled reds, oranges, and yellows mixed with the greens of the fur trees to create a specular frame to the many ocean vistas.
The race finishes on main street in the fishing village of Southwest Harbor. There are shuttles for runners and spectators from the finish, back to the start in Bar Harbor.
