RRCA is Accepting Applications for 2017 Runner Friendly Community Designations

04/03/2017

Runner Friendly designation highlights communities working together to make running, safe, affordable, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone

RFC Logo smallArlington, VA – In 2011, the RRCA developed its Runner Friendly Community designation to help shine a national spotlight on communities, both large and small, committed to making running accessible and safe for all residents.  Since 2011, over 45 communities in 25 states throughout all regions of the country have applied for and received the designation.

The RRCA considers three primary segments when reviewing the Runner Friendly Community applications: (1) community infrastructure, (2) community support, and (3) local government support.  Each segment includes important criteria as part of the designation process. The goal is for applicants to prove that their community works together to promote running as healthy exercise while ensuring runners’ safety. Applications for the first round of 2017 Runner Friendly Community designations are due by June 30, and can be found at http://www.rrca.org/our-programs-services/programs/runner-friendly-community/nomination-requirements

Applications should be submitted by an RRCA member (running club, event, event management company, specialty running store) that represents a variety of constituents in their local running community.  Applicants should demonstrate that the community is working in collaboration with both public and private organizations to support running. In addition to completing the online questionnaire, applicants are required to provide three to four letters of recommendation from community leaders demonstrating enthusiasm and support for the designation.  Special consideration will be given to submissions that include a video, no longer than five minutes, highlighting running in the community.

“It was a great honor to have the infrastructure and policy work in place which made Indianapolis the 2016 Outstanding Runner Friendly Community,” said Rose Scovel, who submitted the application on behalf of her club, the Indy Runners. “Combined with a long history of great races, the Runner Friendly Community designation is an important way for everyone to show off what a great city we have for runners in Indianapolis.”
