Keep Control of Your Website

KEEP CONTROL OF YOUR WEBSITE

Although what appears on the event website is of keen interest to your sponsors, race directors should avoid yielding control and maintenance of the event website to your sponsor. If you do this, you will be handing over your most immediate communication tool to someone outside your organization – and someone who may have hundreds of other responsibilities to a sponsor’s corporate website, or who may not work on the weekends, etc.

In addition, having your event nested within a sponsor’s larger site can mean that your audience has a hard time finding you. A partial solution is to obtain the rights to your domain name (e.g., http://www.rrcaconvention2007.org), so that users entering via that address will always be directed to the most current version of your site.

The bottom line is that runners aren’t going to care where your race website resides; they just want to be able to get the information they need quickly. If your sponsor’s “help” is going to hinder this process, then keep control yourself, as much as you are able.
