2011 RRCA Roads Scholar Wins Kaua’i Marathon
PO‘IPU, HI — The organizers of the Kaua‘i Marathon might want to consider lowering the time needed to win their Speed Challenge.
Tyler McCandless, 24, of Boulder, Colo., (2011 RRCA Roads Scholar) smashed the Kaua‘i Marathon course record by over 7 minutes en route to a 2:23:19 finish, well under the 2:30 time needed to cash in on a $15,000 prize.
“I feel really good after this,” McCandless said. “In the last few miles I heard I had about a minute lead. After that, I knew they couldn’t catch me unless I broke down.”
The 2010 Kaua‘i Marathon winner, Michael Wardian, came in second, checking in at 2:26:19. With McCandless and Wardian beating the 2:30 mark, both runners went home with money. McCandless won $8,750 while Wardian was awarded $6,250 for his efforts.
