2012 Utah Winter Series
The Salt Lake City Track Club held its 34th Annual Winter Running Series on January 28, February 11, and February 25 of this year, enjoying a record number of pre-registered participants for the three race series.
As in previous years, the races were held along the southern end of the Great Salt Lake, starting and finishing in front of the historic Great Saltair venue. The out and back course for all three races is about as flat as runners will find in the Salt Lake City-area, and is definitely enticing for so many enthusiastic runners.
Both the 5K and 10K races, also recognized as RRCA State Championships, brought unusually warm weather to the Salt Lake Valley. The mild temperatures contributed to fast times and an enjoyable morning for over 300 participants in each race. Things turned different in the 15K, during which wind gusts of over 60 mph were reported at some points during the race, and temperatures dropped from above 40 degrees before the race into the 30s as a storm was blowing in. The race times weren’t as fast as previous years, but over 200 runners overcame the challenge of running into the wind for the second half of the race.
Special thanks go out to our title sponsor for the series, New Balance Salt Lake. Not only did they provide gift cards to the overall winners, they also provided and operated the chip-based timing equipment with their own volunteers and provided most of the raffle prizes. Thank you to Scott Spurrier, the owner of New Balance Salt Lake and a long time supporter of the local Salt Lake City running community.
Thanks also go out to our other sponsors Great Harvest Bread and Beans & Brews for providing bread, coupons, and coffee for each of the races. Special thanks as well go to the students of East High School, who volunteered at the aid stations for both the 10K and 15K races. And of course we appreciate all of the club volunteers who contributed their time on race day and beforehand for what was once again a well-received event in the running community.
The club wishes to congratulate the overall division winners for each of the races, including RRCA State Champions in the 5K and 10K races:
