Boomtown Run Renamed, Receives National Recognition

JOPLIN, Missouri—In honor of the 161 individuals who lost their lives in the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin on May 22, 2011, the Boomtown Run has been renamed the Joplin Memorial Run. It will take place Saturday, May 19, 2012, a date chosen to correspond as closely as possible to the city-wide activities that will commemorate the first anniversary of the tragedy.

When organizers were forced to cancel the Boomtown Run, the outpouring of support from runners across the country inspired them to transform the event into the Boomtown Day of Service. It was held June 11, 2011, the scheduled event date.

Involving hundreds of runners nationwide and resulting in nearly $40,000 in donations to disaster recovery, the 2011 Boomtown Day of Service is being recognized as one of Runner’s World Heroes of Running in its January 2012 issue.  This honor, usually given to individuals, recognizes the Boomtown Run for its endurance in a time of tremendous struggle in the community.

“We are so honored and pleased to have received this recognition. It is truly a testament to the generosity of the running community,” said Audie Dennis, Joplin Memorial Run Chairperson.

Due to the tremendous growth of the event over the past three years, registration for both the Joplin Memorial Run half marathon and 5K will be capped in 2012.  A maximum of 3,000 will run the half marathon, with the 5K capped at 1,000.  Because of these limits, interested runners are encouraged to register early at www.joplinmemorialrun.com.

“We are very excited about the changes we have made to the 2012 event,” said Dennis. “We were overwhelmed by the support of the running community after cancelling the 2011 event.”

Approximately 325 runners came to Joplin for the Boomtown Run Day of Service to assist in recovery efforts.  In addition, more than $37,000 was raised for tornado relief efforts from monies donated by our registrants and at “satellite” Boomtown Run events held in Florida, Illinois, and Michigan.”

Jeff Galloway, former Olympian and creator of the Run/Walk/Run marathon training program, has agreed to serve on the board of directors for the Joplin Memorial Run and will be a speaker at the 2012 Pre-Race Banquet.  Other activities include a Post-Race Party and free one-mile Kids Run.
