Five Virginia Schools to Receive 2010 Healthy School Award
Sodexo Joins Marine Corps Marathon to Honor Schools with Greatest Participation in Healthy Kids Fun Run
QUANTICO, VA (Nov. 29, 2010) - Five Virginia elementary schools leading the charge toward developing healthy students will receive the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) Healthy School Award and a $1,000 donation from MCM partner Sodexo.
In early 2011, each of the schools will receive the award for outstanding student participation in MCM’s Healthy Kids Fun Run held on Oct. 30 in Arlington, VA. The Healthy Kids Fun Run is designed for students ages 6 to 13.
The 2010 Healthy Kids Fun Run was the largest to date including 3,000 kids from 747 different schools across the country. Of those, five area schools garnered the largest number of students participating in the Kids Run held annually in the Pentagon North parking lot.
The schools who will receive this honor are nine-time Healthy School Award-winner Lynbrook Elementary in Springfield, VA (275 students participating); George Mason Elementary of Alexandria, VA (215 students); Polk Elementary of Alexandria (133 students); Elizabeth Vaughn Elementary, Woodbridge, VA (104 students) and William Ramsay Elementary, also of Alexandria (83 students).
“This award showcases the schools’ commitment to getting their students involved in physical activity,” says MCM Race Director Rick Nealis. “The Healthy Kids Fun Run gets elementary and middle school kids excited about running and hopefully inspires the next generation of marathon runners.”
The award presentations at each school will bring the excitement of MCM mascot Miles the bulldog and U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Base Quantico along with healthy snacks from Sodexo and educational activities from the National Children’s Museum, both MCM partners.
“Sodexo knows the value of a program like the Healthy School Award because it gets kids moving-and we were thrilled to help the program grow by increasing the awards to include five schools this year,” says David Bennett, Senior Vice President of Defense East, Sodexo Government. “The program is in line with Sodexo’s longstanding commitment to the Marine Corps Marathon and the company’s commitment to ensuring the health of America’s youth.”
