Greenville Track Club Sets World Record
Greenville, SC/USA – June 5, 2012 – The Greenville Track Club (RRCA member) was certified this week by the Guinness World Records as the official world record holder of the fastest 100 x 5 km relay completed in 30 hr 1 min 15.3 sec. The race consisted of 100 runners consecutively running a distance of 5 kilometers and then passing the baton to the next runner. GTC hosted the challenge event on May 21 and 22, 2011 at the Eastside High School 400 meter track in Taylors, South Carolina, each runner completed 12.5 laps before passing the baton.
The World Record set by the Greenville Track Club eclipsed the previous record time for the relay of 30 hours 56 minutes, 49 seconds, held by the Charlotte Running Club by over 55 minutes! Prior to that, the record was held by a running club in Jacksonville, Florida.
Longtime member of the GTC Guenter Full got the idea while reading about it in the Running Journal in January 2011, brought it to the attention of several of his running friends and the rest is history! Thanks to the efforts of the organizing committee which consisted of Guenter, Ed Boehmke, Ron Chappell, Kerrie Sijon, and Ed Hughes, as well as the 100 elite runners who participated, the GTC is a Guinness World Record Holder!!
About the GTC
The Greenville Track Club, established in 1972, is the 2nd oldest running club in South Carolina, and the fastest growing Running Club in the Southeast. Our membership includes athletes of every ability level and age group from casual walkers to aspiring runners to premier athletes. The common thread among our members is a desire to be active and enjoy life to the fullest. It is the club’s goal to provide the running and fitness community with a schedule of top quality events in which area residents can enjoy physical activity through participation or volunteering. Our schedule of activities include road and trail races featuring some of the top runners in the southeast, fun runs and walks, and summer track & field meets with events for every member of the family. The club also hosts regular meetings and social activities for members to get together and share new stories (or the same old ones) about their running exploits. Just as we encourage local residents to join our club to support running and fitness on a local level, the GTC supports running on a state and national level through its involvement in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Association and the Road Runners Clubs of America (RRCA). Last but certainly not least, the GTC believes in giving back to the community that supports it by donating sizeable portions of our race proceeds to local non-profits and charitable organizations. We welcome anyone who is interested in becoming a member, and look forward to working with you to make the GTC and the Upstate area the very best it can be!
