Half Marathon Times Qualify RRCA Roads Scholars for 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials

Minneapolis/St. Paul – Jan. 20, 2014 – Team USA Minnesota’s Heather Kampf won the KPMG Bermuda Women’s Invitational Mile on Jan. 17, Travis Burkstrand won the mile at the Northwest Open on Jan. 18, and four athletes competed in the USA Half Marathon Championships on Jan. 19 with RRCA Roads Scholars Meghan Peyton (2011) and Jon Grey (2012) each finishing in 12th place.

Kampf was the defending champion at the Bermuda Mile and posted 4:44.89 for the win this year, which was 5 seconds better than her time in 2013.  “It was really fun to be out here again and I felt a little more familiar and excited about coming back to try to defend my title,” Kampf told The Royal Gazette.

“The last quarter I did feel fast.  I chose to stay with the race for the first half until we turned the corner, and then I just started feeling really good and thought rather than wait and see how this race comes out, I’m going to make it the way I want it to look and just went for it.  Usually what I tell athletes that I coach is you need to trust that feeling, when you feel a little antsy and you know you have more, to give it your all to the very end.”

On the indoor track, Burkstrand won the mile at the Northwest Open in Minneapolis with a time of 4:09.84.  It was the first track competition for the 800 meter specialist since finishing his collegiate career at the University of Minnesota last spring.

At the USA Half Marathon Championships held in conjunction with the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, Meghan Peyton posted 1:13:56 (just 13 seconds off her personal best) and Dani Stack finished in 1:16:07 (previous best in the half was 1:17:22) in the women’s field.  In the men’s field, Jon Grey ran 1:02:51 (26 seconds off his best) and Ben Sathre finished in 1:04:51 (previous best was 1:08:53).

Peyton, Grey and Sathre qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials based on their half marathon times, with Peyton also previously qualifying based on her marathon time of 2:38 at the 2013 USA Marathon Championships.
