Joplin Memorial Run Attendance Soars

Joplin, Mo,—The Joplin Memorial Run Operations Committee is excited to announce record numbers for their events scheduled for Saturday, May 19th.

  • The one mile Kids Run has been sold out for over a week, with 250 children planning on participating.
  • The 5k was originally capped at 1,000 runners, but last week opened up an additional 500 spots because of the overwhelming interest from the running community.  Currently there are 1,150 runners registered for the 5k.
  • The half marathon currently has nearly 1,400 runners registered with numbers expected to reach almost 2,000 by Saturday.

“We have been extremely pleased with the response to this year’s run,” said Race Director Audie Dennis. “We have runners coming to Joplin from 33 different states and the Netherlands. All three of our host hotels are sold out and we’ve already raised over $2,500 for our three partner charities, United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas, Rebuild Joplin and Bright Futures of Joplin.  The runners have been very generous. They are eager to honor those that lost their lives following the tornado and to celebrate how far Joplin has come in the past year. We are looking forward to a great event!”

The Heroes of the Storm Pre-Race Banquet will be held at Missouri Southern State University Friday evening.  Olympian Jeff Galloway will speak and there will be a special presentation to recognize the city employees, police, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses and everyday heroes that served our community in the hours and weeks following the tornado.

Saturday morning’s events will begin with the Pre-Race Ceremonies at 6:15 am. The National Anthem will be sung by tornado survivor Brianna Bushnell, followed by a balloon launch of 161 balloons and 161 seconds of silence.  The half marathon will kick off at 6:30, the 5k at 6:40 and the Kids run starts at 6:50.

The Joplin Memorial Run welcomes back Freeman Health System as the event’s premier sponsor and is pleased to have American Family Insurance as the presenting sponsor for 2012.
