Konrad Steck Sets Record at Governor’s Land run

by Rick Platt, The Virginia Gazette

One week after being a key part of Lafayette High’s Virginia High School League state cross country championships team title in the boys’ 3A division, Konrad Steck, age 14, broke his older brother Kurtis’s Virginia state record in the male 10-14 age division at last Saturday’s 12th annual RRCA Virginia State Championship Governor’s Land 5K Run. Steck also broke his brother’s all-time Colonial Road Runners record for the 14-and-under age category.

At the 2009 Governor’s Land race Kurtis, now a red-shirt freshman at William and Mary, ran a 16:42 to break by five seconds the previous Virginia state record for males 10-14, while bettering the previous all-time CRR 14-and-under mark by 48 seconds. After a breakthrough time of 16:19 at the state cross country meet, Konrad went into Governor’s Land not only wanting to break Kurtis’s record, but also to break 16 minutes on a road course. He was on that pace with an opening 5:08 mile, but slowed a bit coming back to the Park East finish line and was caught by race runner-up Billy Chorey at two miles.

Ryan Carroll won the race in 15:39, breaking by eight seconds the previous Governor’s Land men’s 30-34 age group record of 15:47 by the late Michael Mann in 2002. Chorey was next in 16:16, with Konrad Steck third overall in 16:18, one second faster than his state cross country time, and 24 seconds faster than Kurtis’s 2009 Governor’s Land time.
