Lynchburg Designated Runner Friendly Community
Lynchburg, VA - We are just weeks away from the 38th annual Virginia 10 Miler, and races like that are behind a brand new honor Lynchburg just received.
The city was named a “runner friendly community” by the Road Runners Club of America. Lynchburg is one of 15 selected this year and only the second in Virginia.
Getting the honor is big, not only because of its impact on our quality of life, but also the economic impact. Marjette Upshur with the City of Lynchburg said that was highlighted by letters of support from Genworth Financial, Centra, AREVA and Moore & Giles.
“Any recognition we can get like this on a national basis is something that puts us out there to people from all over to come to Lynchburg or relocate their business in Lynchburg because they know we support these kinds of efforts,” Upshur said.
A lot of things play into getting this designation: community infrastructure, community support and local government support for running.
Lynchburg has experienced a running boom in recent years with the city hosting more than 20 running events annually.
Other cities just named include: Allen Park, MI; Carson City, NV; Decatur, IL; Knoxville, TN; Lawrence, KS; Missoula, MT; Reading, PA; Salem, MA; and The Woodlands, TX.
