RRCA and Members Named in Arlington County Proclamation

Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette has signed Arlington County’s annual proclamation declaring the third Monday in April as BOSTON MARATHON RUNNERS DAY


WHEREAS Arlington County is home to some of the nation’s outstanding distance runners and some of the country’s most promising young athletes, including Olympic Trials qualifiers Michael Wardian, Mary Kate Bailey, Julie Culley, and Veena Reddy, plus 2009 USA Junior 5K Trail Champion Brian Rooney; and

WHEREAS, Arlington County offers world-class facilities for running, including the indoor track at Thomas Jefferson Community Center, outdoor tracks at Wakefield, Washington-Lee, Yorktown, and Bishop O’Connell High Schools; forty miles of paths along the Potomac River, Four Mile Run, and I-66; and forest trails at Fort C.F. Smith, Lubber Run, Potomac Heritage, and Theodore Roosevelt Island; with more paths planned for Long Bridge Park; and

WHEREAS, Arlington is home to two of the largest long distance events in the world, Army Ten-Miler and Marine Corps Marathon, and dozens of smaller races and track meets; and

WHEREAS, Arlington is home to many running clubs including Arlington Road Runners Club, D.C. Road Runners Club, Marathon Charity Cooperation, Northern Virginia Running Club, Pacers Track Club, Potomac Runners, Potomac Valley Track Club, and Shirlington Running Club, as well as national headquarters of Road Runners Club of America; and

WHEREAS, ninety Arlington runners will run the 114th Annual Boston Athletic Association Marathon, the world’s most prestigious running event;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chairman of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2010, as
