RRCA Kicks Off 2013 Championships with January Events
Eastern Region Championship
Wicked Running Club’s New Year’s Day Road Race Continues Its Sixth Consecutive Year
Proceeds Help Fund Scholarships for Local High School Athletes
SALEM, MASS. - Wicked Running Club presents the sixth annual Wicked Frosty Four Mile Road Race on January 1, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., at the Tavern in the Square in Salem. The event is an RRCA Eastern Region Championship event. This fun and spirited event helps raise funds to award four annual scholarships to local high school runners. Between 600-700 participants are expected to register for this year’s run.
“We are thrilled this race has been successful and continues to grow each year,” said Co-Race Director Shari Hewson. “We’ve been able to award scholarships to some really terrific local students – young people that set a great example for others,” added Co-Race Director Alison Phelan. The 2012 Scholarship recipients were Tim Contois, Madeline Piela, Kerry Phelan and T.J. D’Amato who each received $1,500.
While the race sees many Salem residents, runners come from all over the North Shore, Greater Boston and even other states — even as far as Las Vegas, Nevada. Last year, 675 runners completed the four-mile course.
Executed entirely by volunteers from Salem’s Wicked Running Club, the race also encourages community involvement. Those who volunteer run the course as a group before the race starts or after the official race is over.
Sponsors for the 2013 Wicked Frosty Four include: Tavern in the Square; New England Running Company; North Shore Medical Center; Ernst and Young; Salem Five; Suffolk Downs; King Fish Media; Engine House; Waters & Brown; Wolf, Greenfield, & Sacks; SalemRoadRaces.com; NorthShoreRoadRaceGuide.com; Boston Herald; Stephen O’Grady Foundation; Conover Tuttle Pace; Toomey Sports Running Center; and Mix 104.1.
The race begins in front of Old Town Hall, 32 Derby Square, Salem with day-of registration and a post-race party at Tavern in the Square. The first 400 applicants receive free technical shirts commemorating the event. Entry fee is $20 for entries received by December 25, 2012, $25 thereafter. About the Wicked Running Club:
With more than 300 people, the Wicked Running Club’s members come from all over the North Shore and beyond. The club encourages runners of all levels – even walkers – to join a community of like-minded people for group runs, races, clinics, and more. Wicked Running Club presents three races each year, The Wicked Frosty Four on New Year’s Day, the Wicked Kidz 1/2 Mile and 1 Mile race, and Miles Over the Moon both during the summer. The Club also partners with the North Shore Medical Center to operate the annual North Shore Cancer Run. The Wicked Running Club Grand Prix Series is designed to encourage club members’ participation in specific races throughout the year, to promote competition among age group runners, and to recognize runners who have excelled at a variety of distances over the course of the year. Open Houses are held in the fall and spring for both current members and those interested in joining the club. For more information visit: www.wickedrunningclub.com.
