Run@Work Day 2011 Overview

Run@Work Day 2011 was a success!  Several companies, organizations, and communities across the country participated in the the 6th Annual Run@Work Day.  The goal of Run@Work Day is to encourage adults to get 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work, during lunch, or immediately following work. Below is a brief synopsis of various Run@Work Day events across the country as told by their respective organizers.

  • Run@Work Day with the RRCA National Office and Board of Directors
  • After a day of working in the office and being in a board meeting, the National Office and the Board of Directors got together to complete a 30-minute run/walk.  We ran on a trail that led from Crystal City, VIrginia, and went past Reagan National Airport.  We even stopped briefly to watch a plane take off right over our heads!  A great time was had!

  • Run@Work Day in Salem, MA
  • On a beautiful, crisp Fall day, many employers in Salem and the North Shore allowed their employees to participate in this event. Over 80 runners started at noon and ran the 5K loop from the Salem Common around the Willows and back.  We also had the opportunity to celebrate Salem being designated nationally by RRCA as a Runner Friendly Community, for which we are all proud.

  • Run@Work Day in Missoula, Montana
  • Missoula participated in Run@Work Day on Friday, September 16th for the second year with eight group runs in the community. Run Wild Missoula partnered with Community Medical Center, St. Patrick Hospital, the City of Missoula, the U.S. Forest Service, the University of Montana, Ecology Project International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Adventure Life to offer the community eight organized runs/walks.

This is what the business had to say about participating in Run@Work Day:

“Attached are some of the pictures from Friday’s crew that ran/walked during the lunch hour. Hope it was a BIG success around town again this year. Thanks for including us – think it’d be GREAT to have area businesses out here join us next year!!” - Community Medical Center

“I had 8 at the Federal Building - 2 walkers and 6 runners. Run@Work last year prompted a monthly work run. We hope that more will join us each month.” –U. S. Forest Service

“We had 25 City and County employees participate in the run/walk from the Courthouse today. Half the group ran a 5k and half of us walked 1.5 miles. It was a ton of fun! Thanks for letting us in on this event. We’ll definitely do it again next year!” – City of Missoula

“We had a pretty good turn-out. All of our staff participated in one way or another, as well as another tenant from our building and someone from the Missoulian. There were 6 of us that ran, and another half dozen that walked. We only ran a quick two miler, but it nice, and I got my run in. We had hoped for more people from the Missoulian to join us so next year I’m going to collaborate more with Justin and try to promote it together.  Thanks for giving us this opportunity!” – Ecology Project International

“The participation at St. Pats was 5 of us, all from my department.  But, 2 were gals who probably wouldn’t otherwise have done any walking today, so that’s a plus.  Myself and a co-worker did a five-mile run.  He said it was great to have someone to run with, to have some motivation, etc.., and we might try to run together once a week now.  Another guy walked 3 miles; he normally walks during lunch, but usually only about a mile. It was free and fun, nobody got hurt, and I got my running done early today!” - St. Patrick Hospital

“The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation just finished our group walk and it was so nice to be outside! Everyone’s day got a lot brighter and we will do this every year! Thanks for all you do Run Wild Missoula!” – Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

“University of Montana employees had a great run along the Kim Williams Trail! There are group runs meeting weekly at 11:30 a.m. Tues-Weds-Thurs in front of the Adams Center now. Thanks, Run Wild!” - University of Montana

“Our running group from Adventure Life included a motley crew with a background with everything from marathons and 100-mile relays to former-life cross-country runners and casual joggers. The overall consensus? An all and all great way to spend 30-minutes. Plans are already brewing to make this a bi-weekly event.” – Adventure Life

  • Run@Work Day at Austin Peay State University
  • Run@Work Day went extremely well! This was our second year holding the event. We had 81 day-of participants. Melony Shemberger, Asst. Director- Communications, and myself coordinate the event each year. The route is around APSU main campus and is a little over 1 mile; we encourage participants to run/jog/walk the route for 30 minutes. We then hold a prize drawing and give away t-shirts, resistance bands, backpacks, etc. This year the math department did a statistics study; about 35 of their students ran the route and at the end logged their time, age, weight, height into an online database to get statistics. I attached a few pictures of our event.

  • Run@Work Day sponsored by the Kettering City School District Wellness Team
  • Our mission is to foster an environment that provides support, information, and opportunities for employees to build healthy lifestyles.  Run@Work Day fits perfectly with our mission and this is the second year we have held this event.  To advertise this event we display several posters in our 13 buildings, post it to our webpage, and send out several email blasts.  We hold six wellness events each year and this event, by far, attracts the most participants.  Over 350 staff members have either walked or run this event over the past two years.  The Run@Work event is held at Indian Riffle Park which is centrally located in the district.  Since our high school Cross Country team holds its’ Cross Country Invitational in this park, the 5K course is chalk-lined and easy for our staff to follow.  Registration is set up in one of the shelters and this year participants received a pedometer, water bottle, and an “I Did It Button”.  Water, apples and bananas were offered post and pre race.  The non-competitive event is held after work on Friday from 3:30-5:00 and we recommend that participants try to get in 30 minutes of running or walking, or both!  Most people come with a co-worker, but some come with their kids, and some come with their pets.  It is really a fun event!  In October we will feature highlights of this event in our Wellness Newsletter that goes out to all of our staff.  The newsletter will feature the event, and will recognize the building that had the highest participation percentage.  We plan on making this an annual event.

  • Run@Work Day with Lenexa employees
  • We had approximately 30 Lenexa employees participate in Freightquote’s first involvement in the Annual Run@Work Day last Friday.

The temperatures were in the low 50s and the sun hid behind the clouds, making the weather just about perfect for this event. All participants had a great time, and some even made new running and walking buddies. With temperatures finally cooling down, walking or running outside is a perfect way to get in your 30 minutes of daily recommended exercise. And taking advantage of the area paths and ponds couldn’t be easier!

  • Run@Work Day at Corporate Brokers
  • We had a blast and the event was a huge success for our organization. We had shirts made up which included the Run@Work logo and each person received a “race bag” prior the race. The bags were filled with Gatorade and some post-race snacks. Each of our three offices (Annapolis, Philadelphia & New Jersey) participated so we had a total of 31 runners. We each ran from our respective offices to a local pub where we celebrated our accomplishments. The overall winner was Jessica Allen, in our Annapolis Maryland office who ran the 3.23 course in 21.23.

  • Run@Work Day with BNSF
  • We had a great time!  It was a last-minute thing that I didn’t publicize too much, just the usual folks whom I know run and a few who have expressed interest. We had six of us out there. I am a Wheaties Fuel team member and provide Wheaties Fuel as well as Athletes Honey Milk to participants. Four of us ran six miles, the other two ran eight.

Special thanks to Suann Lundsberg of Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
