Seven Team USA Minnesota Runners to Compete at USATF Club Cross Country Championships
Minneapolis/St. Paul – Dec. 4, 2012 – Seven Team USA Minnesota distance runners – including a five-member women’s team - will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to compete in the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships on Dec. 8. The open women’s 6 km race will be at 12:45 p.m. and the open men’s 10 km race is at 1:30 p.m. (both times Eastern).
The women’s team includes Jamie Cheever, Meghan Peyton (RRCA Roads Scholar), Heather Kampf, Ladia Albertson-Junkans and McKenzie Melander. The Team USA Minnesota men competing at Club Cross as individuals are Jon Peterson and Chris Rombough.
Cheever, Kampf and Albertson-Junkans were members of the University of Minnesota cross country team when they were collegians. While at the U, Cheever had the second fastest time at 6k cross, Kampf competed at four NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Albertson-Junkans led her team to a Big Ten Cross Country Championship and placed as high as 19th at NCAA Cross.
Last winter Cheever was a member of the U.S. team that competed at the Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge in Scotland, she finished sixth at the USA Cross Country Championships, and was on the U.S. team at the NACAC Cross Country Championships. Kampf is the 2012 USA 1 Mile Road champion and was seventh in the 800 meters at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Albertson-Junkans most recently posted 33:19 for third place at the Cow Harbor 10k.
Peyton and Melander both competed in cross country at the University of Iowa. Most recently, Peyton ran 16:19 at the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5k in San Jose and Melander posted 16:28 at the Turkey Day 5k in Minneapolis.
Running in the open men’s race will be Peterson and Rombough. While at the University of California, Davis, Peterson was the Big West Cross Country champion and made two appearances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing as high as 14th. Rombough ran at the University of Minnesota where he was the Big Ten Cross Country champion. Last winter he was fourth at the USA Cross Country Championships and a member of the U.S. team at the NACAC Cross Country Championships.
The Club Cross Country Championships will be held at Masterson Station Park in Lexington. All prize money is for teams with the first place male and female open teams each receiving $5,000.
