Team USA Minnesota Runners to Start 2014 Season at USA Half Marathon Championships
Minneapolis/St. Paul – Jan. 14, 2014 – Six Team USA Minnesota distance runners, including two RRCA Roads Scholars, will start their 2014 seasons by competing this weekend in the USA Half Marathon Championships in Houston, the Invitational Bermuda Mile in Hamilton, and the Northwest Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis.
The USA Half Marathon Championships will be held in conjunction with the Aramco Houston Half Marathon on Jan. 19 and will feature deep fields of American men and women. Team USA Minnesota runners Jon Grey (2012 RRCA Roads Scholar), Ben Sathre, Meghan Peyton (2011 RRCA Roads Scholar) and Dani Stack,a past attendee of the RRCA’s Run Pro Camp will be among the field.
Grey set his personal best in the half marathon at the Aramco Houston Half in 2012 when he posted 1:02:55. More recently he finished sixth at the 2013 Pittsburgh 10 Mile with a time of 47:38. Sathre’s best races in 2013 occurred at the USA 25k Championships where he finished 10th in 1:17:42 and at the Shamrock Shuffle 8k where he was fifth in 23:19.
Peyton is the USA 20k champion having won the 2013 USA 20k Championships in New Haven on Labor Day with a time of 1:09:57. In addition, last year she was seventh at the USA 5k Championships, ninth at the USA Marathon Championships and ninth in the .US Championship 12k. Stack, who joined Team USA Minnesota in September, will make her professional debut at the half marathon. She has a best in the 10,000 meters of 32:51.
In Bermuda on Jan. 17, Heather Kampf will be in the elite women’s race set to be held Friday evening at the 26th KPMG Bermuda Invitational Mile, an event she won in 2013. Her other road mile wins last year included the Ryan Shay Mile, the Liberty Mile, and the Crim Michigan Mile. She has a best in the distance on the road of 4:27.1.
Close to home, Travis Burkstrand will start his indoor track season at the University of Minnesota where he also ran collegiately. Burkstrand, who joined Team USA Minnesota in September, will compete in the mile at the Northwest Open on Jan. 18. He has a best in the distance of 4:06.68.
