Tennis Great Andre Agassi to Kick Off Virginia 10 Miler with Keynote Address

LYNCHBURG, VA (August 2, 2010) – Genworth Financial, title sponsor of the Virginia 10 Miler, announced today that tennis legends Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf will visit Lynchburg as guests of honor to help launch the 37th annual Virginia 10 Miler festivities.

Agassi will deliver the keynote address to kick off the 10 Miler festivities Friday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Riverfront Park in downtown Lynchburg. Agassi will talk about his experiences and share his thoughts about delivering your personal best. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to sit on the lawn. In the event of rain, Agassi will deliver his keynote presentation at the E.C. Glass High School Theatre/Civic Auditorium, 2111 Memorial Avenue, at 6:30 p.m.  Agassi and Graf also will officially start the 10th annual Amazing Mile Children’s Run on Friday night at 5:45 p.m. near Amazement Square. The Amazing Mile Children’s Run, sponsored by Amazement Square, The Rightmire Children’s Museum, attracts hundreds of children ages 13 and younger each year to lace up their sneakers and participate in this fun family event.

“Genworth is delighted to bring Andre Agassi and Stefanie Graf to Lynchburg to help us kick off this year’s Virginia 10 Miler activities,” said Elena Edwards, Chief Operations Officer for Genworth’s U.S. Life Companies. “These world-renowned athletes share many of the values our participants and sponsors believe in – giving back in the communities where we live and work, inspiring children and adults to give their personal best, and helping people realize the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle to achieving success personally and professionally.”

“With their passion for sports and for life, I can’t think of two stronger champions to help us open the 37th Virginia 10 Miler than Andre Agassi and Stefani Graf,” said Jeff Fedorko, Virginia 10 Miler’s race director. “Andre’s keynote address about achieving your personal best is a message that our race participants, families and community will understand and appreciate not only as it relates to running but to life.”

Also on Friday, Agassi and Graf will host a meet and greet and pre-race warm-up with Girls on the Run of Greater Lynchburg’s participants, their coaches and parents – further inspiring them to achieve their mission of preparing for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Centra Health will sponsor a private reception with Agassi and Graf Friday evening to provide special recognition to the leading sponsors of this year’s Virginia 10 Miler.

“We also are excited to bring all of the Virginia 10 Miler Friday night events downtown – including race packet pickup, the Amazing Mile Children’s Run and our keynote speaker – to Amazement Square and Riverfront Park. Not only will the new venue accommodate a larger audience, the race and sponsors want to engage families and individuals in all that downtown Lynchburg has to offer,” said Fedorko.

About Andre Agassi:
After turning pro at the age of 16, Andre Agassi rose to international fame, earning 60 men’s singles titles including eight Grand Slam titles – one Wimbledon Championship, two US Open titles and one French Open title – and four Australian Open titles. A former World No. 1 plyers, Agassi is the only man to win all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic Gold medal. Agassi has been a part of three winning Davis Cup Teams (1990, 1992 and 1995). Agassi retired as an active player following the 2006 U.S. Open. His career spanned 20 years and more than 860 career matches won.  Off the court, Agassi established The Andre Agassi Foundation for Education, which has raised more than $80 million dollars for at-risk children in Las Vegas since 1994. The Foundation focuses on transforming public education so that all children have a shot at success, and in 2001, the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy charter school opened for children in grades K-12. For his work, Agassi has won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award twice (1995 and 2001).
He is married to Hall of Fame tennis legend Stefanie Graf. They have two children, Jaden Gil and Jaz Elle. The couple resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.

About Stefanie Graf:
Tennis champion Stefanie Graf, winner of 22 Grand Slam singles titles, remains the only player to win Wimbledon, the French Open, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open at least four times. In a career spanning 17 years, Graf won 107 singles titles and is the first—and still only— woman player to achieve the “Golden Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same year. Graf was ranked No. 1 for a WTA-record 377 weeks, the longest of any player, male or female, since rankings began. With the same purposeful strength she brought to professional tennis, Stefanie turned her attention to aiding suffering children. In 1998, she founded Children for Tomorrow, a charity focused on supporting children and families who are victims of war, violence, abuse, exile or loss of the family.

About the Virginia 10 Miler:
The 37th Annual Virginia 10-Miler, 4 Mile Race, and Amazing Children’s Mile, sponsored by Genworth Financial, highlight the Lynchburg Road Runner’s Summer Race Series and serve as a regional championship for the Road Runners Club of America. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, at E.C. Glass High School.  For the first time, the Amazing Mile Children’s Run will be held at Riverfront Park in downtown Lynchburg, on Friday September 24.
