USATF Approves 2011 Syracuse Festival of Races Performances, Yielding Six New U.S. 5K Records
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Six pending U.S. 5K records produced by athletes competing in the USA Masters 5 km Championships at the 2011 Syracuse Festival of Races (SFoR) on October 2 have been approved for U.S. 5K record status by USA Track & Field (USATF) at the national governing body’s annual convention, held last week in St. Louis, MO.
This year’s six additional records bring to 41 the total number of U.S. 5K records surpassed or tied on the SFoR course. The 5K distance (approximately 3.1 miles) is by far the nation’s most popular road race distance, with Running USA reporting 4,670,000 finishers in the approximately 11,000 5K road races held in the U.S. in 2010.
Among the 2011 SFoR performances ratified by USATF on Sunday was Stephanie Herbst-Lucke’s U.S. women’s 45-49 5K mark of 16:37. Ms. Herbst-Lucke, 45, of Atlanta, GA, improved upon the previous W45-49 mark of 16:39, previously held by three-time Olympian, Colleen DeReuck. Along with the five-year age-group record, of course, Ms. Herbst-Lucke’s 16:37 becomes the U.S. W45 single-age 5K mark, which was also previously held by Ms. DeReuck.
Also ratified as a U.S. 5K age-group record was Kathryn Martin’s 2011 SFoR finishing time of 19:04. Ms. Martin, 60, of Northport, NY, improved upon Sabra Harvey’s listed U.S. W60-64 age-group record of 19:12, and in so doing also improved upon Ms. Harvey’s prior U.S. 5K W60 single-age mark.
Also approved as new U.S. 5K single-age records are the 2011 SFoR performances of Jan Holmquist, 67, of Burlington, MA, and Henry Sypniewski, 93, of Cheektowaga, NY. Ms. Holmquist’s finishing time of 22:10 trimmed fourteen seconds from June Machala’s listed U.S. W67 single-age mark of 22:24 that has stood since 1998. Mr. Sypniewski’s time of 47:38 lopped an amazing 13 minutes and 29 seconds from Max Popper’s listed U.S. M93 single-age mark of 1:01:07.
The 20th annual Syracuse Festival of Races will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012, hosting the USA Masters 5 km Championships for the fifth consecutive year and—as always—providing runners of all ages, abilities, and levels of experience the opportunity to race with runners from throughout the United States on one of the world’s fastest record-eligible 5K road race courses.
Major support for the 2011 Syracuse Festival of Races comes from: MVP Health Care; Tops Friendly Markets; USA Track & Field; Kinney Drugs; Fitness Forum Physical Therapy; Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists; Driver’s Village; Dick’s Sporting Goods; YNN; Eagle Newspapers; Citadel Communications; the Syracuse New Times; Family Times; and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club, Inc.
