Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon Launches Registration with Blizzard of Entries
National Harbor, MD, February 15, 2012 – Registration for the third running of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon opened today with much anticipation. Entries were swift throughout the day as running enthusiasts registered for the October 7, 2012 footrace from Mount Vernon, VA to National Harbor, MD. The race is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and the 13.1-mile course is USATF certified.
According to a statement released today by WWBH officials, which appeared in the race’s first newsletter, significant modifications have been made to enhance this year’s event weekend. Some of those changes include naming the newly-renovated Holiday Inn SW - Eisenhower Avenue Hotel as the official host hotel of the 2012 Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon, announcing the Holiday Inn as host of the Runners’ EXPO/Packet Pickup, expanding the EXPO to two days from one day and offering free parking and Metro access, enlarging the size of the EXPO room, offering a limited number of race-day parking spaces at Hoffman Town Center to relieve parking concerns in National Harbor and creating two dynamic WWBH training programs, one for first-time half marathoners and one for experienced ones.
Said Holiday Inn General Manager Marlin Kiernan: “The Holiday Inn Alexandria SW at Hoffman Town Center is pleased to announce being named the 2012 venue for the Wilson Half Bridge Marathon participant EXPO. “ The hotel has agreed to offer participants discounted room rates all race weekend.
Signing on the Holiday Inn and its surrounding parking was part of an effort to make the WWBH more convenient and accessible to the majority of our field. “We have spent the last few years observing our race and others at National Harbor and we are committed to making changes which maximize our runners’ safety and enjoyment,” said Jeff Ruday, Finish Festival and EXPO Director. “We continue to listen to our runners’ comments and we take their feedback very seriously.”
Returning sponsors include Virginia Commerce Bank, Elizabeth Lucchesi Realtor/McEnearney Associates, NOVA Pain and Rehab, Curcio Law Firm and National Harbor.
This year’s event will benefit the following charity partners: Autism Speaks, Back on My Feet, Child & Family Network Centers, Rebuilding Together Alexandria Veterans Housing, Washington Area Women’s Foundation and RunningBrooke Fund. The WWBH organizers have created a “Run With a Purpose” section of the race website dedicated to fundraising for all of these worthy causes.
The race also will be offering at least $15,000 in prize money. Last year, Moses Kipkosgei ran the fastest half marathon in Maryland history in winning the WWBH in 1 hour 2 minutes. Also, four U.S. elite athletes qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Men’s Marathon in Houston last month.
Three Championship events will be held during the WWBH – Road Runners Club of America Virginia State Half Marathon Championship, Potomac Valley Association (USATF) Half Marathon Championship and the NIB Visually Impaired National Half Marathon Championship.
Early registration fee is $85 which includes race entry, bib#, technical t-shirt, eight refreshment stops, unique finisher’s medal, food and beer at the finish, bus transportation and free parking. Register at www.wilsonbridgehalf.com
