Youth Grants Paying Off
On April 23, 2011, Antwon Hicks won the invitational 110-meter hurdles at the 2011 Drake Relays.
Now turn the clock back seven years to when Hicks was 12 years old. He was awarded an Arkansas Road Runners Club of America Children’s Running Scholarship by the Chile Pepper Runners of Hot Springs, Arkansas. The scholarship, funded by the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, gave Hicks a new pair of running shoes and entry fees for the remaining fall road races in Hot Springs and Little Rock.
Hicks was recognized at the 1994 Octoberfest Fast 5K awards ceremony after he completed his first 5K by Race Director Buzz Wilson and then RRCA Arkansas State Representative David Samuel.
“I am pleased to say that the RRCA/Arkansas organization and Chile Pepper Runners were a part of getting Antwon off and running,” said Samuel.
In 2007, the RRCA developed the Kids Run the Nation Fund to assists running clubs, events, and schools that are interested in implementing or currently have a youth running program. This small grant program is funded by restricted contributions from RRCA members, individuals, foundations, and corporations. One hundred percent of the money raised is restricted to the grant fund and no portion of contributions to the Kids Run the Nation Fund are used for administrative expenses.
