Keflezighi to Encourage Runners at RRCA Alabama State Championship

ORANGE BEACH, Alabama - The Kaiser Realty Coastal Half-Marathon, 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run needs volunteers to help with the event on Saturday. The races already have one high-profile helper. Olympic Silver Medalist Meb Keflezighi will be at the event, courtesy of BP. Keflezighi finished second in the marathon at the 2004 Summer Games, earning the first medal for the United States in the event in 28 years. He finished fourth in the marathon at the London Games earlier this summer. Keflezighi, a native of Eritrea, moved to the United States when he was 12. Half-marathon participants will spend some time with Keflezighi. He's scheduled to stretch, warm up, encourage runners at the starting line and congratulate them at the finish line. "We are honored and fortunate for BP to bring world-class Olympic athlete Meb Keflezighi to the Gulf Coast," said Beth Gendler, vice president of sales for the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Sports Commission, in a press release. "Meb is a prime example of striving for excellence, and we hope that his story will impact each participant and fan of the race." Saturday's races are serving as the Road Runners Club of America Half-Marathon Alabama State Championship and 5K Alabama State Championship. Read the full story on
