A nationwide movement on Friday, September 18 to inspire fitness at work and schools
Arlington, VA - The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), the largest running organization in the country, is partnering with many employers and schools across the U.S. to promote the 10th RUN@WORK Day and 4th RUN@School Day
on Friday, September 18, 2015. Through this partnership, organizations are working together to promote physical activity and healthy living within our community and around the country.
The goal of RUN@WORK and RUN@School Day is to encourage adults and children to get 30-minutes or more of exercise each day, either in the morning, during lunch or immediately following work or school. RUN@WORK Day also encourages companies to help employees schedule time for physical activity. Incorporating exercise into one"s daily routine can markedly improve one"s overall physical health.
"Our school as a whole is very active, and all about fitness and running,' said Wendy Burton, Wellness Coordinator at Irving Elementary School in Winfield, KS. "We"re excited to be able to participate in RUN@School Day, and I have shared our plans for the event with the entire district in hopes others will take advantage of this important opportunity.'
Those plans at Irving, a K-5 school of 345 students, involve setting up a track at recess. Burton"s goal is to have every student run at least one lap, with the opportunity for those who are capable to run longer. Students who take to running will have the opportunity to continue doing it at Irving throughout the year as well, as the school has a very active youth running program.
In St. Paul, Minnesota, all State of Minnesota employees are encouraged to take their personal break time to participate in the annual Minnesota State Capitol RUN@WORK Day 5K Run/Walk event. Held every year in conjunction with the RRCA"s RUN@WORK Day, the race is open to employees from numerous state agencies and takes place on the Capitol Mall. Registration is free, and there are even running clinics for new or beginning runners not up to running the full 3.1 miles.
"We have been fortunate in our efforts to coordinate our annual 5K run/walk event with the RRCA RUN@WORK date for the past few years,' said Gary Simon, from the Office of Human Resources at the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation and a member of the State of Minnesota Run@Work Committee. "The event has continued to flourish and we have great people that come together to host and participate in the event.'
"For RRCA, it is great to see and partner with so many companies and schools across America involved in our RUN@WORK Day series of events,' said Jean Knaack, Executive Director of the RRCA. "Participation in the 10th RUN@WORK Day and 4th RUN@School Day is an important step in raising awareness about the importance of daily physical activity for all.'
