RRCA to Celebrate the 9th Annual RUN@WORK Day and 3rd Annual RUN@School Day

The RRCA is partnering with many employers and schools around the U.S. to promote the 9th Annual RUN@WORK Day and 3rd Annual RUN@School Day on September 19, 2014. Through this partnership, our organizations are working together to promote physical activity and healthy living within our community and around the country. The goal of RUN@WORK Day is to encourage adults and children to get 30-minutes or more of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either in the morning, during lunch, or immediately following work or school. RUN@WORK Day also encourages companies to help employees schedule time for physical activity. Incorporating exercise into one"s daily routine can markedly improve one"s overall physical health. "I suggested our school participate in this event, because it is important to share the message that starting physical fitness at an early age is essential for overall health,' said Kareen Lawson from the Lord of Life preschool in Fairfax, Va. "RUN@School Day seems like a fun way to start off the school year with that thought in mind.' About 80 children and 12 staff members will take part in the RUN@Sschool Day event by walking or running a course around the school, at various points throughout the day, with parents invited to come and participate as well. As outlined in the Physical Activity Guidelines Midcourse Report, early childcare programs are an important setting in which to provide physical activity for young children. At the Brookstone School, a K-12 institution in Columbus, GA, the plan is to invite all members of the school community, including students, staff, and parents to participate in the day. Many of the students will be allowed and encouraged to walk or run on the track during their PE classes and recess that day. "All of our Administrators are on board to promote RUN@WORK and RUN@School Day here at Brookstone,' said Mark Erb, a teacher and coach at the school with an enrollment of 850 and staff of 75. 'olumbus has a pretty active running community and we have many runners and exercise enthusiasts on our staff.' Erb"s goal is to have at least one person on the school track at all times between 6 am and 6 pm on September 19, representing that any time of the day can be used to improve physical fitness. "The RRCA is excited to have so many great offices and schools involved in our RUN@WORK Day series of events', said Jean Knaack, executive director of the RRCA. "Participation in the 9th Annual RUN@WORK Day and 3rd Annual RUN@School Day is an important step in raising awareness about the importance of daily physical activity.'
