ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 6, 2014 - Back in the nation"s capital for an unprecedented long run, the 28th president of the United States Woody Wilson declared registration "open' for the fifth annual Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon today.
Hundreds and hundreds of athletes signed up today for the 13.1-mile trek from fellow president George Washington"s Mount Vernon Estate to the modern resort of National Harbor, crossing Woody"s namesake bridge over the Potomac River. The USATF-sanctioned race is slated for October 5, 2014, beginning at 7 a.m. Registration can be found at the newly-designed www.wilsonbridgehalf.com
"It feels great to be back in town, especially the White House,' said Woody, the race"s official mascot who has trimmed as he runs himself into shape. "I"ve been training around the DC area since August and jumping into some races as well. I"m getting pretty fast, but I am trying not to let it go to my head.'
The field will be limited to 5,000 runners, including elite athletes vying for $9,000 in prize money, with incentives for American elites. Loyalty pins will be awarded to those runners who have entered all five Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathons, and all finishers will be rewarded with the distinctive large Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half finishers medal.
This year"s participants will be treated to a signature professional race experience as well, with a technical tee-shirt premium, the support of eight water/fuel stops along the course and a beer garden serving favorite microbrews. Top-notched medical support and security continue to be a hallmark of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon"s dedication to safety and enjoyment of its runners.
The Woody Wilson EXPO and Packet Retrieval again will be hosted by the Holiday Inn Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, conveniently located next to the Metro on the Yellow Line.
Deemed one of the 27 best half marathons in the nation by Runner"s World Magazine last year, the race boasts one of the most scenic and historic courses in the country. This year"s event will benefit the following charity partners: Autism Speaks, Back on My Feet, Child & Family Network Centers, Rebuilding Together Alexandria Veterans Housing and RunningBrooke Fund.
