World-Class Field Lined up for 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA, July 2, 2012 - Following tradition, a world-class men"�s and women"�s field will toe the line at the start of the 43rd running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race on Wednesday, July 4. Athletes in the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race will be competing for a share of the $83,000 prize purse. Additionally, the 2012 Peachtree Road Race will serve as the 2012 Professional Road Running Organization"�s (PRRO) Race of Champions, with two men and one woman eligible to receive a $10,000 PRRO bonus*. Eligible athletes must place first in the AJC Peachtree Road Race in order to take home the PRRO bonus. "�With very competitive and deep open fields on both the men"�s and women"�s sides, all of the top-10 seeded runners have a shot at taking home the top prize,' said Tracey Russell, race director for the AJC Peachtree Road Race and executive director of the Atlanta Track Club. "�We anticipate a close and exciting race at the largest 10K in the world.' This year"�s men"�s field is very competitive, with almost 30 runners. Sammy Kitwara (KEN), 2009 and 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race champion with the second fastest Peachtree finish on record (27:22), will be vying for another first place finish at the 2012 Peachtree. His 28:02 at the World"�s Best 10k is in the top 20 fastest 10k times so far this year, and his 58:48 at the Rock "�n"� Roll half marathon made him the sixth man to crack the 59-minute mark in the half marathon. Challenging Kitwara will be Micah Kogo (KEN), the former record holder of 10K road racing (27:01). Mamitu Daska (ETH), who has the $10,000 PRRO bonus on the line, will be one to watch on the women"�s side. Two runners in this year"�s men"�s field are contenders for the PRRO Circuit payout after placing first at one of the four races on the 2011-2012 PRRO Circuit schedule, which includes the Utica Boilermaker 15K, World"�s Best 10K, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10M and Lilac Bloomsday Run 12K. Sammy Kitwara (KEN) qualified after winning the 2012 World"�s Best 10K (28:02) and Ridouane Harroufi (MAR) took top honors at the 2012 Utica Boilermaker 15K (43:30). Mamitu Daska (ETH) is the sole woman eligible for the 2012 PRRO Circuit bonus. Daska placed first in the 2012 Lilac Bloomsday 12K (38:26). The 43rd running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race will take place on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. The race begins at 7:17 a.m. for the women"�s professional field and 7:30 a.m. for the men"�s professional field and the early waves. The start is on Peachtree Road by Lenox Square Mall and finishes on 10th Street near Piedmont Park. *If a PRRO eligible male and female runner both win the AJC Peachtree Road Race, the $10,000 will be divided in half between the two athletes.
