Runners fought 90-degree temperatures during 100-minute event held for centennial
Just like the tough Marines who have served for a century on Marine Corps Base Quantico, runners battled 90-degree temperatures while completing the Quantico 100 presented by GEICO Military during the 100-minute run on the installation tonight.
Lt. Col. Joe Galvin, 44, a Staff Judge Advocate of Holly Ridge, NC, won the event that started at 5:30 p.m. on Quantico’s Butler Stadium. He was among 356 participants logging as many miles as possible on a 2.62-mile loop course within the 100-minute timeframe. Galvin, (pictured right with Director Rick Nealis), completed the course 12 times, logging 15.72 miles.
“It was good to run to celebrate 100 years of Quantico … and it was probably the hottest 100 minutes I ever ran but Marines are used to performing in all types of conditions,” Galvin said after he finished.
Finishing first among women runners was Kelly Buroker, 35, of Arlington, VA, who ran across nine mats, completing 11.79 miles.
The male Masters winner was Mark Clingan, 46, of Quantico, VA who ran across 10 mats to log a half-marathon distance of 13.1 miles. Mariel Morgan, 40 of Woodbridge, VA took home the award for female Masters, completing 11.79 miles.
A shorter version of the event, the Quantico 100 Mini had participants running the same course only once, but as fast as they could. Taking first place among the males for the Mini was eight-year-old Liam Scott of Stafford, VA, who said the event was “really fun” after finishing in 52:13. Molly Murray, 18, of Quantico, VA won the Mini among female participants, completing the course in 44:59.
Top team and age group awards also were presented as runners and spectators enjoyed a free outdoor concert with the surf rock band Group Captain and the Mandrakes. All results are currently available on the website at www.marine.marathon.com but remain unofficial.
The Quantico 100 was presented by GEICO Military as part of the MCM Event Series that runs from March through November. For more information about Marine Corps Marathon events visit www.marinemarathon.com
