2011 Kids Run the Nation Grant Recipients

Rutland County Vermont Kids Run the Nation – Rutland, VT – For the past three years, Rutland County Vermont has continued to focus on boys and girls in grades kindergarten through sixth grade who are interested in running.  At the conclusion of their program, everyone participates in a county-wide one mile run on the local high school track.  Afterwards, children who wish to participate in the Crowley Brothers’ Memorial Kid’s Downtown Mile are allowed to do so.

Kids Run the OC – Newport Beach, CA – Over a ten-week period, a Certified Volunteer OC Marathon Foundation Coach introduces the youth to running, stretching, and other athletic activities which help improve speed, agility, eye/hand coordination, flexibility, and overall fitness.  Over the course of our ten-week program, the students accumulate the equivalent of 25.2 miles and will be ready to finish their own marathon by competing in the one-mile Kid’s Run the day of the OC Marathon.  Program activities are designed to foster self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment in our youth, provide them with goal-directed after-school activities, and help them to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

Adams in Motion – Corvallis, OR – Adams in Motion (AIM) offers all their elementary students the chance to run or walk on a chipped, 0.2-mile path during their 20-minute break three mornings a week during the school year.  Students are recognized for every 10 miles completed.  Twice a year, the whole school participates in a run/walk with a marked course, race clock, bibs, volunteers, and fruit, snacks, and drinks.

Dreamfar High School Marathon – Chesnut Hill, MA – Dreamfar High School Marathon (DHSM) is a program that teaches at-risk students the benefits of goal setting and hard work as a means to achieve success in high school and beyond. Dreamfar started in 2008 in one high school and will now have teams in seven Massachusetts High Schools.  Teachers from the schools and adults from the community train side by side with the students each Saturday from November to May, until the completion of the Providence Marathon.

Anacostia Kids Running Program – Washington, D.C. – The Anacostia Kids Running Program is a new program that will meet at least once a week at Anacostia Park.  This program will introduce kids to their mini-marathon program where kids will run 26.2 miles over the course of six months. 

Bramleton Kids Run the Nation – Brambleton, VA – With use of the RRCA Kids Run the Nation materials, Bramleton’s emphasis is on participation and developing a healthy lifestyle as opposed to a competitive running program.  The program is co-ed, spans ages 6-14, and there are a number of families (siblings and parents) participating together. We feel this promotes a fit lifestyle for families in our area and also encourages families to find healthy ways to enjoy time together.

Mustang Marathon Club – Allen, TX – In their second year, the Mustang Marathon Club has increased as an organization to two running coaches and two grades of participants.  They meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:20 to 4:00pm for running activities and games that teach technique, form, nutritional, hydration tips, and goal achievement based on the Kids Run the Nation Program Guide.

Manhattan Cross Country Club – Manhattan, KS – The Club hosted the Body First School Fitness Challenge, a series of Fun Runs that involves nearly 1000 youth. The Club has been in existence since 2004 and helped establish middle school cross country programs in local schools. The Club has adopted RRCA’s principles for age-appropriate running, and in 2011, has written a practice curriculum that mirrors the Kids Run the Nation program.

San Jose Run Club – Pomona, CA – Another new program, the San Jose Run Club allows children in grades 4-8 at San Jose Elementary to be more active in a safe and positive environment.  When the students go home they are unable to go outside due to safety concerns and lack of facilities.  The run club meets after school three days a week to encourage the students to be more active with the goal being to have the students participate in a 5K.

Kids Run the School – Jacksonville, FL – Kids Run the School is a new program at an elementary school in the heart of Jacksonville, Florida.  Their running program will help students live a healthier lifestyle, give them something to do after school, and provide each individual student an opportunity to grow and feel successful. Students in 3rd through 5th grade will be invited to join the running club.

Fremont Flash Youth Running Program – Freemont, OH – The Freemont program combines the components of Outdoor Track and Field, Cross Country, Indoor Track and a wide variety of community running events, the program focuses on learning, setting goals, achieving goals and having fun. It is our belief that no matter what the talent level of the participant, everyone who participates in our program is considered a champion. We want our young people to understand that reaching the finish line first is not as important as what you learn along the way.

Allentown Elementary Running Club – Semmes, AL – Each participant will be required to reach their reading goals in the classroom as well as participate in three local races in Mobile, Alabama.  Weekly meetings will be practice for the children as well as a time for them to socialize with their running peers.  The program will serve children in the fourth and fifth grade. 

Auburn Opelika Running and Track Association Children’s Half Marathon – Auburn, AL – Teachers in local elementary schools facilitate weekly runs for the children during school which allows time to teach the students the importance of fitness.  Participation begins to be tracked 12.5 weeks prior to the date of the Auburn Classic Half Marathon. On the day of the event, the children will run .6 miles in order to complete a “half marathon”. Each child will receive a t-shirt and a medal as their reward for committing to fitness and completing a half marathon.

Thomson-McDuffie Middle School Runner’s Club – Thomson, GA – The TMMS Runner’s Club aims to promote a healthy lifestyle through exercise and nutrition. Participants will meet 2-3 days a week after school to establish good running habits, nutrition, and sportsmanship. Also, students will participate in local 5Ks.

Townley Marathon Kids – Irving, TX – The goal of the program is to give the kids the knowledge and examples of good choices to give them the advantage of a healthy lifestyle that will carry over throughout their youth and into adulthood.  With the goal-setting of the program and the positive feedback of working towards a defined goal they are striving to instill a love of running and the satisfaction of goal-setting and achievement.

White Bear Area YMCA Teen Running Club – White Bear Lake, MN – The Teen Running Club meets for a period of 10 weeks for 45 minutes each week.  Teens participate in structured, age appropriate fitness and aerobic activities.  The topics include goal-setting, nutrition, proper running form, and sportsmanship.  The program will culminate with a one mile run/walk for all participants and their families.

JUST RUN – Carmel, CA – JUST RUN is a multifaceted program that promotes physical activity, running, good citizenship, healthy eating, and pride in accomplishment.  During this past school year, JUST RUN celebrated the logging of one million miles run, since inception, and was endorsed by two national fitness organizations - the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

JYS Mud Runners – Juneau, AK – Beginning in the spring of 2011, the JYS Mud Runners began a Couch to Half Marathon in 10 Weeks program.  This training with the youth has become a part of what JYS does every day, providing SED (Severally Emotionally Disturbed) youth with exciting and challenging activities to encourage healthy living.

Tidewater Striders New Energy – Virginia Beach, VA – New Energy is a youth team of the Tidewater Striders that meets to run together after school two days a week in central locations throughout the Virginia region.  Club also sponsors a youth running grand prix which links a dozen youth mile races during the year.

Run For Your Life Kids After School Run Club – Fort Collins, CO – Children in this program meet Run Club coaches twice each week for an organized running program with the goals of increasing activity (logging 25 miles of running over 8-weeks), learning about the importance of healthy, active living (through an educational component provided each week) and promoting citizenship (logging 13 “positive steps”).

Starting Block Striders – Springfield, MO – The group meets once a week for one hour from January to the first of June.  The kids are trained to run three one-mile local races.  The children are taught proper running form, functional strength, flexibility, and nutrition.  We are about teaching innovation in order to make running fun and lifelong.

Atkinson Running Club – Portland, OR – The Atkinson Running Club is a school-wide running club that occurrs once a week throughout the school year.  Students who participate run laps around the school yard and volunteers tally the runners’ laps through the use of mileage cards.  Incentives are provided every five, 10, 20, and 26.2 miles.

Flying Eagles Running Club – Dallas, TX – Flying Eagles is a full school running program that offers additional exercise to everyone at no cost to participants. All students in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade can participate.  Our running club meets Mondays after school. Parents, teachers, and preschool brothers and sisters (and sometimes pet dogs) are encouraged to participate with the running club. 

Florida Striders Children’s Running Program – Florida – The children’s running program focuses on providing incentive awards for elementary school run/walk programs in 41 Florida elementary schools and extends to over 10,000 children.  They provide Starter Kits for new school run/walk programs with a complete template on how to begin and maintain an effective program and initial supplies (index cards, decorative hole punches, file boxes, & rolling carts).

Plateau Kids Running – Enumclaw, WA – Plateau Kids Running is a new program that will be held during physical education classes or at recess.  Three teachers have already committed to the 6-8 week running program that will reach 1500 kids. 

Northwest Broward Road Runners Youth Running Program – Coral Springs, FL – Children in this program will learn about running form, breathing, foot strike, training methods, pacing, and the basic joys of running.  With six separately coached running groups, children of all levels can come and challenge themselves to “run a half or full marathon” over the course of nine weeks.

Laurel Running Thunder – Laurel, MT – The Laurel Running Thunder started in the summer of 2010 with eight students who wanted to say in shape and compete during the summer months.  In the summer of 2011, they grew to 30 runners.  Incentives at this time are purchased by the coaches and volunteers. Their goal is to reach 50 children next summer.

Husky Hustle – Harland, ME – Another new program, The Husky Hustle will be a chance for students in grades K-4 to run or walk at recess.  They will have 30 minutes to complete as many laps as they can.  For every two laps (1K) the students will earn a paw print on the Husky Hustle Wall of Fame.  This program would be offered daily to all interested students, both boys and girls, starting in September and ending in June.
