RRCA invites members to apply for the Runner Friendly Community designation. This national program recognizes communities that support running as a healthy, accessible, and inclusive form of physical activity for people of all ages and abilities.
Communities designated as Runner Friendly demonstrate outstanding infrastructure, community support, and local government backing that makes running safe and enjoyable. These communities not only encourage physical activity but also attract races, running events, and new residents who value healthy lifestyles.
The RRCA encourages local running clubs, event organizers, or municipal leaders to spearhead applications. To be considered for designation, communities must highlight:
A robust network of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure
Active involvement of local government in supporting running and events
Community organizations and businesses that support the running community
Ongoing safety initiatives for pedestrians and runners
“Running thrives where communities embrace it—from sidewalks to support systems,” said Jean Knaack, RRCA Executive Director. “The Runner Friendly Community program celebrates towns and cities that foster an environment where runners feel welcome, safe, and encouraged.”
The RRCA awards the designation twice a year. The upcoming application deadline is July 30, 2025 and November 1, 2025. Selected communities will be recognized on the RRCA website, featured in national communications, and receive a commemorative plaque and other promotional tools.
